Shanghai Introduction

1.Brief introduction of Shanghai
Shanghai is a coastal city in the western part of the Pacific Ocean, bordering on East China Sea, located at the south of Changjiang River and north of Hangzhou Bay.  Jiangsu and Zhejiang Provinces are its neighboring provinces to the west.  Shanghai covers a total area of 6340.5 square kilometers with a population of 24.15 million.  In 2015, Shanghai’s GDP reached 2.5 trillion yuan, representing an average increase of 7.5% over the past five years.  Shanghai’s GDP per capita reached USD 15290, the same as in medium-level developed countries in the world.  Shanghai has become one of the largest economic centers in China.  Shanghai will adhere to the development of the first priority.  The city will embrace the concepts of innovative, coordinated, open and shared development, and adapt to the “new normal” of economic growth.  The city will focus on steady growth and structural readjustment by advancing supply-side reforms and pressing ahead with innovation-driven development.  Shanghai Free Trade Zone (FTZ) was launched in September 2013, which is the first pilot FTZ in China.
2.Economic and trade between Shanghai and the US
(1) The US investment to Shanghai. The US is the main source of foreign investment to Shanghai.  By the end of 2015, American investors have invested 8158 projects in Shanghai, accounting for 9.9% of the city’s total, with the contract value of USD 19.4 billion.  More than 150 US companies have set up their regional headquarters in Shanghai.
(2) Import and Export between the US and Shanghai.  The US is the second large trade partner of Shanghai.  In 2015, the trade volume between Shanghai and the US was USD 74.1 billion.
(3) Shanghai’s investment to the US.  The US is one of the important “going global” destinations for Shanghai companies.  By the end of 2015, Shanghai invested 422 projects to the US, with a total investment of USD 18.45 billion, of which USD 8.88 billion was committed by the Chinese investors.
